Authorities say shooting suspect was "paranoid" about Buffalo Grove family's car

A 20-year-old Wisconsin man charged in the fatal shooting of a Buffalo Grove woman was paranoid about vehicles with tinted windows - the apparent reason he fired on Tracy Czaczkowski's car Sunday as she and her family returned from the Wisconsin Dells - prosecutors say in court documents made public Wednesday. Zachary Hays, 20, of West Allis, is charged with one count of first-degree intentional homicide and three counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety. Full story.

St. Charles school board president tackles, disarms gunman

Steve Spurling, president of the Community Unit District 303 School Board, tackled and detained a neighbor who is accused of firing several shots at his injured wife outside their home Tuesday. The neighbor, a 65-year-old man named Scott Turnya, was charged late Wednesday with attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm. Full story.

Wheaton boy severely injured by car

A 6-year-old boy sustained serious injuries when he was struck by a car on the 1200 block of Taft St. in Wheaton, police said late Wednesday night. Lt. Bill Cooley said that boy ran in front of the car, which was eastbound, around 3:55 p.m. Full story.

Former Lake Zurich cop admits arson

A former Lake Zurich police officer pleaded guilty Wednesday to setting a fire in a trash receptacle last year outside a Goodwill store in Algonquin. Robert Brasky, 59, was sentenced to two years of probation, a fine of $1,000 plus court costs and the cost to replace the trash receptacle he burned. Full story.

Home in Elgin retirement community damaged in fire

No one was injured in a fire in the Willow Lakes Estates retirement community Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. The building, a quadruple-wide manufactured home on the 100 block of Bayview Road, sustained about $55,000 in damage. Full story.
