Beer and wine sales planned at Des Plaines golf course

Golfers at Lake Park Golf Course in Des Plaines may soon be able to have an adult beverage after a round.

The city council Monday is expected to vote on an ordinance that would pave the way for beer and wine sales at the 18-hole golf course's concession stand. Park district officials asked the city for permission after they had to turn away a number of prospective group outings that were interested in having alcohol.

"We have a lot of requests and businesses that don't come out because they can't have beer and wine," said Paul Cathey, the park district's superintendent of parks and golf operations. "So this gives us an opportunity to help grow our business."

Only beer and wine would be sold - not mixed drinks - from the golf course's clubhouse. Consumption would be restricted to the clubhouse area and golf course - not the rest of the 76-acre Lake Park, located west of Lee Street between Howard and Touhy avenues.

The park district would be allowed to sell alcohol from 7 a.m. to dusk.

It already serves drinks at its Golf Center Des Plaines, which includes a full-service bar and restaurant, named Club Casa Cafe, inside the clubhouse.

The city council voted 8-0 on a first reading of the ordinance March 21. A final vote is expected Monday.
