Elgin man sentenced to 4 years for 6th DUI

An Elgin man with a long history of driving drunk is again on his way to prison.

Joseph P. McGreevy, 50, of the 800 block of Cedar Avenue, recently pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI after his sixth DUI arrest last December in East Dundee and was sentenced to four years in prison, according to Kane County court records.

McGreevy was sentenced to three years in prison in spring 2014 after pleading guilty to felony aggravated DUI from an April 2013 arrest in Gilberts. He served half that term and was on parole through May 2016, records show.

McGreevy was pulled over in late December by East Dundee police after a driver honked at him while he was in the northbound lanes of Route 25 at Route 72 waiting to turn left.

McGreevy was first in line to turn, but the officer noticed McGreevy's 2006 Ford Escape was outside the actual turn lane. After a traffic stop, the office smelled a strong odor of alcohol on McGreevy, who admitted drinking but refused field sobriety tests, police said.

Kane County Judge David Kliment accepted the plea and issued the sentence. McGreevy gets credit for 79 days served at the Kane County jail, where he had been held on $150,000 bail since his arrest.
