Three charged in Gurnee road rage shooting

Three Waukegan men have been charged in connection with what Gurnee police say was a road-rage shooting at a busy intersection.

Deputy Police Chief Willie Meyer said the men involved in Thursday afternoon's altercation all were charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon as a felon, unlawful use of a weapon as a gang member, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon with no firearm owners identification card, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon with no concealed carry license and mob action.

Charged were: Hector C. Arroyo, 36, who's being held on $250,000 bail at the Lake County jail; Avaro Ruiz, 28, Waukegan, who is in jail on $350,000 bail; and Ramon Corona, 23, who is being held on $150,000 bail.

Authorities said the gunshots were fired in the intersection of Washington Street and Greenleaf Avenue, just west of Route 41. Meyer said an Illinois secretary of state police officer witnessed what was believed to be a road rage shooting and summoned Gurnee authorities at 1:07 p.m.

Meyer said the men now held in the Lake County jail were in one car, while the driver of the second vehicle had a concealed carry license and was released without charges. One vehicle was stopped by Gurnee police Thursday and the other by a Waukegan patrol officer, Meyer said.

Investigators recovered several shell casings from the intersection, which was closed about 1½ hours for evidence work, police said.
