Car crashes into school bus in Lake Villa

Two children were taken to a hospital as a precaution after the Waukegan school bus they were riding in was struck by a car in Lake Villa, authorities said.

Lake Villa police said they responded at 9:06 a.m. Friday to a report of a crash on Grand Avenue east of Cedar Lake Road. Authorities said a 72-year-old man who became distracted while driving a Honda Civic east on Grand crossed into the westbound lane and hit the school bus.

Waukegan Unit District 60 spokesman Nicholas Alajakis said the students, the only two on the bus, were taken to Allendale Association in Lake Villa, a nonprofit organization that educates, treats and advocates for troubled children and their families.

Similar to other school systems, District 60 has students who attend alternative settings for specialized instruction, Alajakis said.

Authorities said the Honda driver was extricated by Lake Villa firefighters and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police did not immediately say if the driver was ticketed.

The school bus driver signed a medical release at the scene.
