Actress co-founded hospital for poor in India

While attending Stanford University, Buffalo Grove native Melanie Chandra and four fellow students wanted to do something for the low-income people in India.

So, they founded the nonprofit Hospital For Hope and raised money to build a hospital in a poor region of northeast India.

“We went there one summer as part of a volunteer program,” Chandra said. “We taught English, did arts and crafts with the kids and helped with reforestation programs.

“There are so many people without proper resources.”

It would normally cost a person three days' salary to go by Jeep to the nearest hospital miles away.

“Now, we have a hospital there that serves 2,000 to 3,000 patients a month.”
