One killed, six injured in Bartlett crash

An 81-year-old woman has died and six other people were injured, one still in critical condition, from a rollover SUV crash earlier today on Lake Street (Route 20) near Naperville Road on the border of Bartlett and Streamwood, authorities said. Streamwood Fire Department paramedics arrived at the scene at 12:40 a.m. Earlier reports that two people were ejected from the vehicle appear to be incorrect, a Bartlett police official said. The 2009 Cadillac Escalade was traveling westbound on Lake Street in the inside lane of traffic when it struck the median. The vehicle lost control and struck the curb and snow embankment north of the roadway before it rolled over on its passenger side in the westbound lanes of Lake Street, police said.

One person was trapped under the vehicle when it came to a stop. Firefighters used rescue air bags to lift the vehicle and free the person, authorities said. The 81-year-old female passenger sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates where she was later pronounced dead, police said. A 16-year-old male passenger also sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to St. Alexius Medical Center before being airlifted to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. The 52-year-old driver and four other passengers suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and were transported to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Elgin. Full story.
