Elgin Volkswagen on Randall Road to open soon

The new Volkswagen dealership in the Elgin auto mall along Randall Road is expected to start selling cars this week.

The building that will house the business at Randall and I-90 has been complete for some time, with many who travel up and down the Randall Road corridor wondering if the car dealer would ever open.

There were VW signs up at the mall and on the building. And then they came down.

Many of you emailed wondering what was going on with the property, worried when the VW signs were gone. Many speculated that the VW dealership deal was off, or that a different type of car dealer would be in instead.

Now, however, the VW signs are back up again and there are even cars on the lot with the Volkswagen logo.

Chris Moran, the general sales manager of the new Elgin Volkswagen, said the business is in fact opening in Elgin, and it is expected to start selling cars this week.

He added that Elgin Volkswagen could possibly hold its grand opening celebration on Black Friday.

"We have so much to get ready, we're trying to get it all done and open," Moran said. "The community has been great about it. People are wondering when we are opening. They are ready to buy cars.

"We've already had interest in our vehicles from many people in the community," Moran said.

The VW dealership has been much anticipated along the Randall Road corridor and in the city of Elgin.

The auto mall near the tollway opened in late 2009.

Since then, the 10-lot mall has only had one tenant - McGrath Honda.

Talks for the VW dealership began in early 2014 when the dealership purchased the property, and after the city of Elgin approved a 25 percent sale tax rebate for the business.

Construction on the 36,195-square-foot building began that spring. It was completed last year, and has been awaiting a tenant ever since.

The auto mall itself has been in foreclosure proceedings in Kane County since 2013.

However, city officials have said it still is ready for more dealers to come in.
