Chain-reaction crash on Rt. 53 involves 5 vehicles

Five vehicles were involved in a high-speed, chain-reaction crash on Route 53 near Elk Grove Village after 6 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said.

The collision caused two of five lanes of northbound Route 53 near Higgins Road to be closed for more than an hour while tow trucks removed the damaged vehicles from the roadway, according to Elk Grove Village Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Keenan.

Paramedics took two people to the hospital for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries, Keenan said.

"They all appeared to be rear-end collisions and were scattered about," said Keenan, adding that one car ended up on top of another. "The roadway was quite a mess."
