Florida driver charged in hit-and-run that killed Lake in the Hills couple

Police in Clearwater, Florida, on Tuesday arrested the driver who they say was behind the wheel in a hit-and-run crash that killed a couple on vacation from Lake in the Hills.

Charles Winzenread was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon at the Clearwater business where he works, according to a police department news release.

He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

John Berg and his live-in girlfriend, Viola Flores, were killed the evening of Oct. 18 when they were crossing a busy street and hit by Winzenread's car, police said.

Authorities say Winzenread fled the scene, but a number of surveillance cameras captured Winzenread's 2002 silver Mercedes around Clearwater Beach after the crash. Police said they later found his damaged vehicle inside his garage in northwestern Hillsborough County.

Berg's son Matt Berg, of Crystal Lake, told the Daily Herald last month that his dad and Flores were just leaving dinner when the accident happened.

John Berg, 62, was a retired auto technician who loved fishing, antique cars, going to car shows and still working on cars on the side, his son said.

Flores, 51, formerly of Aurora, was a sales representative for an Elmhurst restoration construction company. Her daughter, Adriana Muñoz, 34, of Naperville, called her "the most generous, loving person that anybody knew."

Services have been held for Flores, and services are scheduled for Saturday in Algonquin for Berg.
