Settlement reached in St. Charles sushi pit stumble
A Sugar Grove woman recently reached a confidential settlement to her lawsuit seeking damages from a St. Charles restaurant for a tumble into a sushi pit, according to court records.
Sarah Chacon, formerly of St. Charles, sued Wok 'N Fire of St. Charles in late 2103 for injuries suffered when she fell off a sushi table that was converted into a dance area during a December 2012 anniversary party for the restaurant.
According to the suit, Chacon and other patrons were encouraged to dance with restaurant workers even though there were no railings. Chacon fell into a pit where chefs prepared dishes. Employees should have know the situation was hazardous, the suit argued.
Judge Thomas Mueller approved the settlement.
Chacon's attorney, David Murphy, did not return a message for comment. Donald McGarrah, an attorney for the restaurant, declined to comment because of the confidentiality agreement.
Honors for saving girl
Seven Aurora police officers were honored with the U.S. Marshals Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award for saving a 14-year-old girl who was a passenger in a car which plunged into a detention pond in 2013.
Officer Chris Coronado and Special Operations Investigators Greg Christoffel, Ed Doepel, Nick Gartner, Jeff Hahn, Erik Swastek and Josh Sullivan were honored by David Harlow, the marshals office's acting director.
At 7:30 p.m. March 9, 2013, a vehicle driven by a 20-year-old Aurora woman veered off the Interstate 88 ramp at Diehl Road and crashed into a detention pond, which was mostly frozen.
Officers found the car upside down and almost completely submerged. Police and firefighters pulled Annie Prosser from the car.
Prosser's mother and a second 14-year-old girl escaped from the car with minor injuries. The driver died.
Prison for cocaine deal, fight
A 24-year-old Elgin man recently was sentenced to seven years in prison after admitting to a felony charge stemming from a 2013 fight, and for selling cocaine to an undercover officer in 2014, according to Kane County court records.
Mark M. McDaniel, formerly of the 1000 block of Todd Farm Drive, pleaded guilty to one count of mob action filed after an August 2013 altercation in which he and three others were accused of chasing and punching three other men, records show.
McDaniel, who prosecutors say in court filings is a gang member with a previous weapons conviction, got a year in prison for the fight and six years after pleading guilty to selling $1,000 worth of cocaine to the police officer, records show.
