Mets sweep away Cubs' season

If Chicago Cubs fans want to take any consolation in the "wait till next year" refrain, it's that next year could be worth the wait. This year's playoff run, which began with a bang in Pittsburgh, ended with a whimper last night at Wrigley Field as the New York Mets swept the Cubs out of the National League championship series with an 8-3 victory. This end only beginning for Cubs

When you look at it objectively, the Cubs got all they could have out of this postseason. It's a cruel finish for the Cubs after a remarkable season, but nevertheless a sweet tease for what the future holds for a very young and talented group. With no view, no TV, no radio and not even a signal on his smartphone inside the metal elevator, Wrigley Field "elevator man" John L. Haupt of Des Plaines gets his game updates from dejected Cubs fans who need a lift in every sense of that word after a 8-3 loss and a four-game New York sweep. Breuder sues COD board majority conspired against him

One day after being fired as president of the College of DuPage, Robert Breuder filed a federal lawsuit claiming he was wrongfully terminated from the school. He is seeking more than $2 million in damages. The suit names COD's seven-member board of trustees and specifically four of its members - Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton and Trustees Deanne Mazzochi, Frank Napolitano and Charles Bernstein - as defendants, alleging they defamed him and conspired to oust him for political reasons. Police: Man who led Kane deputies on chase escapes hospital

A Hinckley man captured after leading police on a chase Tuesday night is on the loose again after leaving a hospital yesterday before police took him into custody, authorities said last night. Matthew Hageman, 29, left Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora around noon and had not yet been found as of last night, according to a news release from the Kane County sheriff's office. Lt. Pat Gengler said there was not a sheriff's office with Hageman at the hospital, but officers did check on him several times and kept in contact with hospital security. Full story.

Man convicted of Addison battery with garden tool gets 24 years

A Chicago man convicted of assaulting an Addison man with a garden tool over an alleged $50 debt is headed to prison. DuPage County Judge Robert Kleeman yesterday sentenced Runaldo Ramsey, 35, to 17 years in prison for home invasion and seven years for the aggravated battery. The sentences will run concurrently. Palatine man accused of sexually abusing girl

A Palatine man was ordered held on $750,000 yesterday on charges he sexually abused a young girl. Agustin Soto-Morales, 38, was charged with predatory criminal sexual assault after authorities say the girl, who was 7 or 8, told a school social worker about the abuse in September. Soto-Morales was arrested and charged Monday. Full story.

Aurora man killed in crash on I-88

A 65-year-old Aurora man was killed in a two-car crash on I-88 yesterday morning near North Aurora, authorities said. Walter P. Smith was driving a 1991 Jeep west on I-88 in the center lane around 7:30 a.m., and a 24-year-old Naperville man driving a 2012 Toyota was next to him in the left lane, according to a news release from Illinois State Police District 15. 'Back to the Future' DeLorean replica lands at Stevenson High School

In the 1989 movie "Back to the Future II," the Chicago Cubs win the World Series in 2015. Current events didn't affect the enthusiasm of Stevenson High School students and staff members who were treated to a visit by a replica of the DeLorean time machine made famous in the popular 1980s movies. Bears O-line coach says this season has been both 'fun' and 'nightmarish'

Chicago Bears offensive line coach Dave Magazu says his task this season is a microcosm of life. "It's a process and it has been fun," Magazu said. "It's a little nightmarish at times, but that's how life is in general." A rash of injuries has turned their offensive line, which started out as a mostly veteran crew, into what has become - the Bears hope - an earlier-than-expected look at the O-line of the future.
