No charges in bicyclist's death in Aurora

Charges are not likely to be filed against a driver who hit and killed a bicyclist Sept. 5 in Aurora, according to police.

A preliminary investigation indicates the bicyclist failed to yield the right of way while crossing Densmore Road at the Virgil Gilman Trail, according to police spokesman Dan Ferrelli.

Lonnie Diane Wilkinson, 66, of Des Plaines, died of blunt force trauma, according to the Kane County coroner's office. Among the injuries was a fractured skull. She was wearing a helmet.

The Sugar Grove man driving the vehicle, and his two teenage passengers, were not injured.

There is a sign for trail users to yield to Densmore traffic. The speed limit on Densmore, a four-lane road, is 45 mph.

Ferrelli said Wilkinson was riding with a group of people.

According to her obituary, Wilkinson was an avid bicyclist who rode with the Elmhurst Bicycle Club. Her family has directed that any memorial gifts be made to the League of Illinois Bicyclists or to the Ride of Silence. The latter is a movement to honor bicyclists who have been injured or killed, and to advocate for safer roads for bicyclists.
