Car fire blocks Elgin-O'Hare Expressway

A car being towed in the eastbound lanes on the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway near Roselle caught fire Monday afternoon, blocking all lanes for about a half-hour, authorities said.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Amy Pelletier said authorities first began receiving calls about the car at about 3:53 p.m. and had to shut down all eastbound lanes just east of Plum Grove Road at 4:15 p.m.

"It was fully engulfed," she said.

Emergency crews put out the fire and reopened the lanes at 4:45 p.m., Pelletier said.

No one was injured and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time, she said. Pelletier could not specify the make or model of the car that caught fire.
