Elgin man pleads guilty to jewelry theft from girlfriend's father

A 20-year-old Elgin man was sentenced to four years in prison after he pleaded guilty to stealing jewelry from his girlfriend's father, court records show.

Patrick Nehlsen was sentenced Monday in exchange for pleading guilty to residential burglary and was ordered to pay a $694 fine. He received credit for 50 days in custody, court records show.

Prosecutors say Nehlsen was angry with the victim and decided to steal the man's property. The man returned to his Bartlett home May 18 and found the door to his bedroom door kicked open and several items missing, prosecutors said during Nehlsen's bail hearing. They said Nehlsen pawned the items at two separate pawnshops, leaving his identification at one of them.

Nehlsen, who has convictions for drug possession and fleeing police, must complete at least 50 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
