State government shutdown: Who's getting paid?

The midmonth payroll for many state workers looms as a standoff continues in Springfield. Illinois now doesn't have the legal authority to pay new bills, but Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner's office argues the state can pay employees even without a spending plan. Rauner yesterday used his veto powers to eliminate lawmakers' pay raises for the coming year, and two suburban lawmakers vowed not to accept paychecks if state workers don't. Full story.

Legality of Kane County strip search questioned

A Kane County judge will decide later this month whether a strip-search of a Minnesota man after a traffic stop near Elgin was legal and if drugs found during it should be admissible in court, after a defense argument yesterday. Ismael Jaimes-Meza, 23, of St. Paul, is charged with possession of marijuana and possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver. Meza's defense attorney, Kathleen Colton, argued a roadside search and subsequent strip search at the sheriff's department lacked probable cause and were based on a "hunch" from an overzealous Kane County sergeant. Rain delays construction around suburbs

The record amount of rain the area received in June turned schedules for some road and building construction projects into soggy dreams, not reality. Some road projects, including the Peterson Road widening in Lake County, have been delayed because workers couldn't pour asphalt in the rain and couldn't grade dirt without the equipment getting stuck in the mud. Aurora man charged with terrorism support skips hearing

One of two Aurora cousins who federal authorities say attempted to join Islamic State militants and were plotting an attack on a Joliet military base refused to show up in federal court yesterday. Jonas Edmonds, 29, refused to attend the hearing, a U.S. marshal informed the judge. Hasan Edmonds, 22, who was serving as a member of the Illinois Army National Guard at the time of his arrest, was there. Full story.

Batavia man accused of forcing his way into home

A Batavia man has been charged with home invasion and aggravated battery, accused of forcing his way into a friend's neighboring home and fighting with him. Jose E. Garcia, 31, of the 700 block of Walnut Street, used a shoulder to break open the neighbor's door early yesterday morning, according to police. Full story.
