Winter Wood Wonders Festival comes to Kane fairgrounds Feb 12, 2013 12:00 AM
Many people stop by the Winter Wood Wonders carving show at the Kane County Fairgrounds just looking for something different to do indoors on a cold winter day. "They're not expecting much," carver Bob Mau said. "A lot of people come in and they're bored. Then they wander around and they're just shocked at what they see. "They say to me, Wow, this is good stuff and it's really neat. I had no idea.'"

Hoffman Estates closer to choosing fireworks provider Feb 12, 2013 12:00 AM
Despite one village trustee's push to re-examine four fireworks bids for this year's Northwest Fourth Fest, the village board's Finance Committee moved forward Monday with a plan to award the contract to the same firm that put on last year's often criticized show. The contract, which will go to the village board for possible approval next week, would give the 30-minute show to Melrose Pyrotechnics, Inc.

Artist applications available for Bartlett art fest Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
The 11th annual Arts Festival, produced by Arts in Bartlett, will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 29 and 30, in Bartlett Park. The deadline for artist applications is April 1.

Northwest Fourth Fest fireworks still up in the air Feb 5, 2013 12:00 AM
Despite a second discussion Monday, the Hoffman Estates village board couldn't decide which company to hire for this year's Northwest Fourth Fest fireworks show. The board was asked to award a $39,000 contract to Melrose Pyrotechnics Inc. for a 30-minute fireworks show at the festival. But too many unanswered questions resulted in the matter being sent back to a committee.

City celebrates 20th anniversary of 'Groundhog Day'Jan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
It's been more than 20 years since the movie "Groundhog Day" was filmed in Woodstock, but the town hasn't forgotten. The 20th anniversary of the 1993 film will be celebrated in the city where much of it was shot. Hoffman Estates fussier about Fourth Fest fireworks this time Jan 28, 2013 12:00 AM
One of four bids for this year's fireworks display at the Northwest Fourth Fest was $6,000 less than the others, but the Hoffman Estates village board agreed to move the measure forward without recommending any of them. Board members expressed concerns about the number of shells that each of the four bidders proposed to fire off at the festival. “I've heard nothing but grief about (last year's show),” one trustee said.

Talented Elburn teen takes first in state competition Jan 21, 2013 12:00 AM
Two Fox Valley teens did Kane County proud when they competed against other talent show winners in a state competition. The Kane County Fair announced that Nicole DiSandro, 14, of Elburn won first place in the Junior Competition at the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fair talent contest on Jan. 19 in Springfield.

Last year, Rich Placko and the St. Charles Silverado Homebrew Club took some of its homemade beer to a local Elgin bar for a fundraiser, serving tastes for a flat fee to raise money for a children's charity. But when they tried again earlier this year, they were told doing so was likely illegal. State alcohol laws generally don't allow home brewers to distribute their beer except for "use of the maker, his family and his guests."

While shoppers expect to see animatronic holiday displays in storefront windows this time of year, they probably don't expect to see flesh and blood ballerinas performing pirouettes and plies. But that is exactly what folks strolling along in downtown Lombard experienced Saturday courtesy of dance students who performed snippets of Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" at six downtown businesses as part of the village's annual Jinglebell Jubilee sponsored by Lombard Town Centre.
