Crystal Lake man, Downers Grove woman killed in I-290 motorcycle crash

A Crystal Lake man and Downers Grove woman were killed early Sunday morning when a motorcycle they were aboard struck a concrete median barrier on Interstate 290 at Mannheim Road near West suburban Hillside.

Illinois State Police said Matthew P. Summers, 41, of Crystal Lake was driving a gray BMW motorcycle at a high rate of speed with a group of motorcycles when the crash occurred at 1:55 a.m. Sunday.

According to police, the motorcycle was westbound on I-290 at Mannheim when, for unknown reasons, Summers lost control and the vehicle struck the barrier. Both he and passenger Miranda A. Valles, 21, of Downers Grove, were ejected onto the westbound lanes of I-290 and killed, police said.

The motorcycle also struck a light pole, which fell onto I-290 in the eastbound lanes of traffic. Three vehicles, a Mercedes driven by a 29-year-old Willowbrook man, a Toyota driven by a 29-year-old Hanover Park woman, and a Toyota driven by a 26-year-old Cicero woman, struck the pole. All the drivers were wearing their seat belts, and none suffered injuries requiring transport to a hospital.

The crash remains under investigation, state police said.
