Elgin police, fire to conduct active shooter drill at middle school Tuesday

Emergency personnel are conducting an active shooter drill Tuesday at Kimball Middle School in Elgin.

The training session will involve 200 role players, Elgin Area School District U-46, and the Elgin police and fire departments, officials said. It will begin with a briefing in the Kimball gymnasium at 8 a.m. and end around noon.

During the drill, nobody will be allowed to access the middle school grounds. From 9 to 11:30 a.m., Weston Avenue will be closed between Wing and Demmond streets.

As part of the training scenario, emergency personnel will practice command post operations, evacuations and treatment of injuries both inside and outside the school, among other emergency tasks. People with simulated injuries will be taken to local hospitals.

Additionally, medical personnel will practice entering a dangerous area while being protected by law enforcement officers as part of a Rescue Task Force. Injured role players would then be assessed, treated and evacuated.

The drill will be critiqued after the scenario is completed, at which time the school grounds will reopen.
