Rolling Meadows teen pleads guilty to firing weapon

A Rolling Meadows teen pleaded guilty Wednesday to shooting off a gun in Mount Prospect earlier this year.

Ivan Avila, 19, was sentenced to three years in prison with a recommendation for the Illinois Department of Corrections' impact incarceration program, or boot camp, in exchange for his guilty plea to reckless discharge of a firearm, a class four felony.

Avila, who received credit for 77 days in custody, was also ordered to pay $444 in fines.

Police responded to a report of gunshots in the 1500 block of Canford Cliffs Road the evening of Jan. 23. Witnesses reported two men running through a parking lot and entering a silver vehicle which drove north on Busse Road. Officers stopped a vehicle that matched the witnesses' description. They later learned from Avila and co-defendant Juan Ibarra, 22, of Hoffman Estates, that they had fired the weapon into the air to intimidate rival gang members, a police spokesman said.
