A demonstration is expected 3 p.m. today in front of Lake County headquarters to decry Lake County State's Attorney Michael Nerheim's announcement that no charges would be brought against the Zion police officer who fatally shot Justus Howell. COD's Breuder ordered positive, pre-election mailers to 'balance' negativity

The College of DuPage's vice president of marketing and communications told trustees at a special meeting yesterday that embattled President Robert Breuder asked him in early March to produce a postcard that would be mailed to households districtwide. Requests for additional postcards followed. “The discussion at the time was that there was a lot of negativity in the air regarding the college,” Joseph Moore said. “This was meant to balance some of that negativity.” New board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton has called the mailings “electioneering.” Full story.

Expert: Bloody prints at Elgin murder 'consistent' with suspect's shoes

An audio recording is expected to be played in court today of a conversation between Paul Johnson, who is accused of killing his neighbor, and his half brother in which prosecutors say Johnson implicates himself. A forensic scientist testified Thursday that bloody shoe prints at Lisa Koziol-Ellis' Elgin townhouse resembled the tread marks on a pair of Nike shoes worn by Johnson the day of her murder. Geneva kids form 'living painting' with national artist

Almost 400 Geneva students, teachers and aides created a “living painting” of a Viking ship under the direction of artist Daniel Dancer. From the bucket of a Geneva Fire Department truck, Dancer shot aerial photos and video of the project, meant to teach kids about collaboration and approaching problems with a “big-picture view,” he said. DUI conviction means prison for Palatine man

A Palatine man whose background includes multiple DUI convictions was sentenced to prison in exchange for pleading guilty to an amended DUI charge, court records show. Kenneth Sistler, 52, was sentenced to three years in prison and fined $4,479 in exchange for pleading guilty to aggravated DUI. Full story.

No decision yet on controversial plan for homeless in Lake Zurich area

The Lake County zoning board of appeals didn't decide last night whether a decision that designated a former senior center near Lake Zurich as a government use should hold. If not, the plan by the PADS homeless agency to house 14 clients in the so-called Midlothian Manor could face additional hurdles. Full story.
