Westminster Christian students bring 'Annie Jr.' to stage
The middle school students at Westminster Christian School have come together to present "Annie Jr." onstage.
Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday, April 24, and 1 and 7 p.m. Saturday, April 25, in the chapel of Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2700 Highland Ave., Elgin.
"Annie Jr." is an abbreviated version of the full run theatrical show, setting it in 1930s New York City, where Annie and the orphans take center stage in Ms. Hannigan's orphanage for girls.
"I have been having the time of my life! It's been an honor to play such a familiar character," said sixth-grader Grace Miller, who plays the lead role of Annie.
Jeremiah Staten has the commanding role of Oliver Warbucks.
"Playing the role of Oliver Warbucks as he transforms from a serious and selfish person to a fun-loving parent is an exciting experience," the seventh-grader said. "There is great acting, singing and dancing for everyone to enjoy."
Wacky Ms. Hannigan is skillfully played by eighth-grader Hannah Richardson.
"This has been a fantastic role because it involves a combination of multiple characters' personalities that I have played in the past," she said. "I am blessed to be a part of a cast of such talented people that God has brought together."
"This is my first production at Westminster," said Johanna Johnson, the musical director. "Stepping into a new school is a daunting task, but the students, faculty and families of WCS have been so welcoming. It made it so easy to direct these amazing students. I felt a little like Annie after a few rehearsals, singing 'I Think I'm Gonna Like it Here,'"
"Annie Jr." has a cast of 50 students ranging from third to eighth grade. Tickets are $12 for premium reserved seats, $11 for premium reserved senior seats, $8 for reserved seats, $5 for student and general admission. Purchase tickets at the door, online at westminsterchristian.tix.com/ or through the school box office at (847) 695-0310, ext. 218.
