Buffalo Grove artist earns summer art school scholarship

Buffalo Grove High School junior Cedric Cavazos has been awarded an Early College Program Summer Scholarship from the New Hampshire Institute of Art for his painting, featured at the 2015 Illinois High School Art Exhibition. He and four other Buffalo Grove art students - Pat Boyd, Lianna Greene, Patrick Stelmach and Edyta Czaplinski - were chosen to display their work in the exhibit at the Zhou B Art Center, in Chicago. The Illinois High School Art Exhibition showcases the top high school artists in northern Illinois and annually displays more than 350 pieces from 65 area high schools. Nearly $5 million in scholarships, 60 Early College Summer Program scholarships and more than $10,000 in cash prizes were awarded at the show.

• Arlington Heights resident Scott Jamieson, a vice president at Bartlett Tree Experts, has been recognized with a Certificate of Distinction, the highest honor of the Purdue University Agricultural Alumni Association. The award recognizes contributions to agriculture that go far beyond the requirements of a job or profession. Jamieson was among six recipients from around the country to receive the award. Over his 30-year career in the green industry, he has been actively involved in a variety of national, statewide and local industry and civic organizations.

• Ten Prospect High School students qualified for the National Speech Tournament, which will be held this June in Dallas. They are: Molly McDermott, dramatic interpretation; Andrew Pittman, humorous interpretation; Melissa Spacapan, humorous interpretation; Kit Fitzgerald, humorous interpretation; Chris Kivlahan, domestic extemporaneous speaking; Lilian Hermes, extemporaneous speaking; James Farquharson and Ben Marshall, duo acting; Jimmy McDermott, original oratory; and Allie O'Connor, original oratory.

• Realtor Liz Ford is now affiliated with the Schaumburg office of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. Ford joins Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage with 16 years of real estate experience working with first-time homebuyers, new construction and the luxury home market.

• Artist Mary Olson will display her watercolor and oil paintings at the Frisbie Senior Center, 52 E. Northwest Hwy., Des Plaines, throughout April. Olson is a member and the current membership chairman of the Des Plaines Art Guild.

• Alaina Mikkelsen of Palatine has received the Regents' Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the 2015-2016 academic year. Mikkelsen is the daughter of Carrie Mikkelsen of Palatine and Carl Mikkelsen of Hoffman Estates and will be a 2015 graduate of Palatine High School.
