Two injured in semi truck crash on Route 53 up north

A semitrailer truck driver and his female passenger were injured and traffic delayed yesterday afternoon after the semi rolled over on Route 53 at Lake-Cook Road near Palatine and Buffalo Grove, state police said. The ramp at Route 53 northbound to Lake-Cook eastbound remained closed for more than three hours. Full story.

Elgin mother and child escape house fire

A mother and her small child were able to escape a fire that damaged an Elgin house yesterday morning. Firefighters entered the home at about 11 a.m. on the 300 block of Triggs Avenue and discovered thick black smoke coming from a first-floor bedroom. A mother and her 3-year-old daughter were able to climb out a window to safety. Full story.

Would harder-to-crush pills help curb drug addiction?

Giving patients painkillers that break up into chunks, not powder, could help prevent people from abusing them and then turning to harder drugs, suburban residents told lawmakers in Springfield yesterday. An Illinois House Committee gave preliminary approval to the idea, after testimony described how powdered drugs are easier for abusers to snort or to dissolve in liquid and inject. Full story.

Westmont woman pleads guilty to fatally stabbing husband

A Westmont woman accused of fatally stabbing her husband during a 2013 argument pleaded guilty yesterday to second-degree murder. Lisa Davis, 44, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for the slaying of David Davis. Full story.

DuPage board member facing DUI charge

A longtime DuPage County Board member, Grant Eckhoff, is facing a DUI charge after a traffic stop outside his Wheaton home. Eckhoff, 55, of the 200 block of North Erie Street, was charged with one count of DUI and operating an uninsured motor vehicle, according to a Wheaton Police Department report. Full story.

Naperville parent paints mural for kids in library

Parent Joung Kyung Cho is painting a fantastical world on the wall of the Clow Elementary School library in Naperville. Cho, mother of Clow fifth-grader Sangin Kim, volunteers at the school and asked to paint something more permanent than the monthly rotating bulletin boards. Full story.
