Woman, small child escape fire in Elgin

A mother and her small child were able to escape a fire Wednesday morning that damaged an Elgin house.

Elgin firefighters responded to the call at about 11 a.m. in the 300 block of Triggs Avenue and arrived to find light smoke coming from an open window, fire officials said in a news release.

After entering the building, firefighters discovered thick black smoke coming from a first floor bedroom. A mother and her 3-year-old daughter were able to climb out a window to safety, officials said.

Fire damage was limited to the bedroom of the home, but smoke damage was extensive throughout, fire officials said. Total damage was estimated at $15,000. The house is currently uninhabitable.
