Girl hurt after self-defense spray accidentally released at Kohl's

A girl was injured Sunday after accidentally releasing a self-defense spray inside a fitting room at Kohl's Department Store in Schaumburg, authorities said.

Schaumburg Fire Chief Dave Schumann said the girl was trying on clothes at about 7:30 p.m. at the department store on the 100 block of Barrington Road when the canister released.

“It was some type of self-defense spray, like pepper spray or Mace,” he said. “It accidentally released when she was trying on clothes in the fitting room.”

The girl was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, Schumann said. Five other people were treated at the scene and released.

Schumann said the report was initially called in as a hazmat, and rescue workers used respirators to protect themselves from the eye irritants.
