While the temperature hovered at 1 degree outside, guests and workers inside KeyLime Cove Indoor Waterpark Resort in Gurnee basked in tropical weather at the pools.
More than 100 people floated on KeyLime Creek, slid down the Hurricane Vortex and Screaming Banshee slides and lounged poolside with frozen drinks in hand while the rest of the suburbs bundled in heavy coats, scarves, hats and gloves to ward off the bone-chilling cold.
"Currently today with it being such an extreme temperature, we do have a lot of people utilizing the Daycations, which is just that you can come to the water park for a family of six and you get a room from 10 (a.m.) to 4 (p.m.)," said Dale McFarland, president of Veracity Hospitality.
Lifeguards worked in shorts and T-shirts as guests splash around in their swimsuits while occasionally looking out the large windows to see a cold wind blow across the frozen snow.
"It's always 86 degrees and sunny by the pool," said Anthony Pollack, director of aquatics. "I'm in shorts today enjoying my work day in a vacation setting, a tropical paradise at KeyLime Cove. It's fantastic."
Outside temperatures hover in the low single digits on Thursday, but visitors float in more tropical conditions inside KeyLime Cover's indoor pool under the watchful eye of lifeguard Erik Herrera of Gurnee.
