Voter apathy best friend of incumbents

The only way to achieve term limits in Illinois is by a constitutional amendment. If a term limit proposal were on the ballot it would require only a 60 percent majority of those voting to pass.

That is the easy part. The reason this is as unlikely as snow in July is because as private citizens we cannot get a term limit proposal on the ballot. The only ones who can do that are the very legislators who would be negatively affected by term limits.

For a term limit proposal to reach the ballot it needs to be introduced by a legislator. Republican State Representative Ron Sandack from Downers Grove has done that. For his proposal to reach the ballot the bill must pass both the House and the Senate with a 60 percent majority vote. The bill will never come up for a vote unless it appears to the leadership that it has enough votes to pass.

If you are in favor of term limits contact your legislators and let them know. If you are not sure who your legislators are go to www.elections.il.gov and find out. Voter apathy is the incumbent's best friend.
