GreenFields of Geneva honor MLK's legacy by serving as blanketeers for Project Linus

On Jan. 19, GreenFields of Geneva honored the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through a day of service. "Dr. King devoted his life to helping create a better world. MLK Day is known as a 'day on' rather than a 'day off'," said Rebecca Sytsma, activities coordinator at GreenFields. "We recruited GreenFields residents along with volunteers from throughout the area, to collaborate on a wonderful service project."

Throughout the course of the day, approximately 60 residents and volunteers hand tied 50 blankets for Project Linus. A nonprofit organization, Project Linus collects new blankets and afghans handmade by "blanketeers." These are distributed to children who are ill, traumatized or otherwise in need.

"Since it was a school holiday, we had a lot of kids helping out," said Sytsma. "The residents of GreenFields are very service-oriented in general and this project was particularly appealing because of the intergenerational component. And the resulting blankets were colorful and cozy."
