NEDSRA participants hold singalong with seniors

Katrina Daly performed a rousing rendition of "Frosty the Snowman" during a recent visit to Sunrise Senior Living in Bloomingdale.

The 24-year-old Roselle woman was part of the Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association's second annual Singalong-With-Seniors show.

The show was sponsored by NEDSRA'S Transition-Aged Recreation Experience and Community, a program that strives to help young adults with disabilities develop social and life skills through community-based activities. The group meets three times a week.

The singalong was headed by NEDSRA's program leader, 26-year-old Mike Crawford, who serves as a mentor for recently graduated high school students with intellectual disabilities.

"We try to plan things in the community that will give our participants an understanding of the holiday season and how it affects lonely seniors," he said. "This event offers them a chance to interact with people they don't normally meet."

Addison resident Christina Macchitelli and Ben Binder from Lombard also were on hand to pass around Christmas cards from NEDSRA, along with staffers Kris Robertson and Melissa Muzi.
