Waukegan church leads protest rally in wake of Brown, Garner deaths

Alternately angry and determined, members of Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church and other churches in Waukegan raised their voices yesterday in what they said was a call for justice. They were reacting to the recent deaths of unarmed black men - like Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in Staten Island, New York - at the hands of police officers. "It's time for the church to speak up, and speak out," said the Rev. Janice Brazil Cummings, pastor of Trinity AME Church. "The AME church was born out of protest." Full story.

Hinsdale teen critical after being struck by train

A 17-year-old girl who was struck by a Metra train Saturday night in Hinsdale remains in critical condition at Loyola University Hospital in Maywood, authorities said yesterday. An investigation is ongoing, Hinsdale police Chief Bradley Bloom said. "From various witness accounts, it does not appear to be an accident," Bloom added. Full story.

Shoppers at Deer Park Town Center must have been checking their calendars to make sure it wasn't Black Friday. The line of people pouring out the doors of the Vera Bradley store yesterday - with a few Lake County sheriff's deputies in the mix to keep order - wasn't there for deals, but to meet "Dancing with Stars" champions Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Elgin police searching for suspected shooter

Police are looking for a suspect who fired gunshots at a 33-year-old Elgin man as he walked in a neighborhood west of the city's downtown early yesterday morning. At about 4:16 a.m., Elgin police responded to Lawrence Avenue and Silver Street for a report of gunshots heard in the area, authorities said. Once on scene, officers learned that the victim was walking in the area when he saw an unknown person walking nearby. The victim told officers the person then shot in his direction before running from the scene, police said. The victim was not injured. Full story.

$1.25M settlement in I-88 crash that killed Aurora woman

A $1.25 million settlement has been reached in a wrongful-death lawsuit filed in connection with an April 2013 crash on Interstate 88 that killed an Aurora woman. Carmen Cantu, 61, died after her 2011 Nissan Sentra was rear-ended by a car and then struck by a semitrailer while heading east on Interstate 88 near the border between Kane and DeKalb counties. No Noah, no problem for Bulls in Miami

The Bulls were missing Joakim Noah for the third straight game with a sprained right ankle but still had more than enough to roll past Miami 93-75 at American Airlines Arena. The Bulls ended their eight-game streak of scoring 100 points but held the Heat to its lowest point total of the season. Bryant passes Jordan on NBA scoring list

Kobe Bryant entered last night's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves needing nine points to pass the icon with whom he is often compared, Michael Jordan. Bryant got the mark with two free throws with 5:24 to play in the second quarter. Now only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone have scored more points than Bryant. Full story.

Saad does what it takes to get win for Blackhawks

Blackhawks forward Brandon Saad gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead with a crucial goal in the third against the Calgary Flames Sunday night, earning him the praise of his team. "That's Saader; he's our man-child," said goalie Antti Raanta, who stopped 23 of 24 shots in what may have been a must-win game for him. "He's skating so good out there." Full story.

Cutler says he's fine with Marshall

Wide receiver Brandon Marshall is injured (ribs, lung) and won't suit up for the Bears tonight when they take on New Orelans during Monday Night Football. Sunday, Bears Quarterback Jay Cutler says the alleged fractured relationship between him and injured wide receiver is a matter of perception.
