Konerko's big day deserves a Sox sellout

Please tell me that Paul Konerko Day will be witnessed by a sellout crowd.

Please.

You'd think:

With Konerko and Derek Jeter retiring, the average pace of play would pick up a bit next year just by osmosis, but if not it's good to know that the Commish has formed a committee tasked with decreasing length of games.

Unfortunately, that committee is arguing over what kind of coffee to serve and where to hold its next meeting and they're pretty sure they won't wrap up their brief introductory session in less than four hours.

A new look:

I've really liked the Bears' defense this season - yes, even including their loss to Buffalo.

It's just different.

It's swarmy.

And now it's also intercepty … and that's a great combination.

So, for now at least, kudos to Mel Tucker.

But:

Having said that, it doesn't mean Aaron Rodgers won't come out Sunday and slice them apart.

He probably will - on occasion - especially considering the safety situation and all the injuries, but I still think the Bears win.

Liking it:

New among the in-game entertainment during Blackhawks games is a feature in which they sit a player in front of a camera, play a song, and then watch as he tries to guess the name of that song.

It's fun, but also a tad frustrating for people like me of a certain, ahem, age, especially when a tune from the soundtrack of your life pops up and all you see is the player's blank stare followed by a "no idea."

Ugh.

BTW:

I know it's popular to rip Kiss Cam, but you have to admit that every time it's on you cannot not watch.

C'mon, just admit it.

Kinda sad:

The end of baseball in Chicago is upon us.

Kind of sad II:

The end of horse racing season at Arlington is upon us.

Not all is lost, however:

Because the Ryder Cup from Gleneagles in Scotland begins today!

Memories:

I actually played that Scottish course and have one memory that stands out: Before we were allowed to tee off on a rainy morning, our two groups received a stern, 10-minute lecture from the Gleneagles club pro about how the course was trying to grow out the rough for an upcoming tournament, so it was fine to drive in the fairways, but please, please stay out of the rough.

We were like, what? Really? We were just happy to still be able to take carts despite the conditions.

But of course:

Not three minutes later we look up from waiting on the tee to see a guy in our first group 100 yards out flying through, you guessed it, the rough in search of his lost ball.

Honestly, there's one in every crowd.

The underdogs:

Now, because everyone, and I mean everyone, is predicting a European romp, I'm gonna go with an epic upset for Team USA with Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth leading the charge.

Compare and contrast:

Julius Peppers: 10 combined tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble.

Jared Allen: 11, 0, 1

You are correct, sir!

I know it's sacrilege, but for my money the best SNL cast was the one featuring Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks, etc., with Phil being my all-time fav.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I can't wait to read the new book on the life and times of my man Phil Hartman.

One more thing:

Get out and enjoy this weather.

Please.
