Advocacy Group to register voters, hold mock elections and host candidate forum

With the 2014 elections fast approaching, the League of Women Voters of Glenview is focused on voter service for Glenview and the surrounding area. The League will register voters, stage mock elections for high school students, and host a candidate forum. As a nonpartisan organization, the League has been planning for months to engage and empower all voters to participate this year.

Glenview League deputy registrars will be registering new voters at the Park Center, Glenview Library, Vi, Covenant Village, Glenbrook North and South High Schools. This will be the first time voter registration will utilize computers. Registrars will help register voters online, as well as with the traditional yellow cards. These events will be held during September and October in conjunction with National Voter Registration Day, which is Tuesday, Sept. 23.

The League is also planning mock elections for the students at Glenbrook South and Glenbrook North High Schools in cooperation with their respective Social Studies Departments. The students have had the opportunity since 2008 to experience the voting process supported by the League, in conjunction with the Cook County Clerk's Office.

And finally, a candidate forum for the 17th District State Representative race featuring Laura Fine (D) and Kathleen Myalls (R) is planned for Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10-11 a.m. at the Wilmette Village Hall, 1200 Wilmette Avenue. The Glenview League is sponsoring the event with the Wilmette and Evanston Leagues.

Additional dates and times will be published in the village, library and park district newsletters, as well as the local papers and on the League website Calendar of Events: http://glenview.il.lwvnet.org.

Membership in the League of Women Voters is open to men and women 18 years of age. The League is a nonpartisan political organization which encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy thorough education and advocacy.
