Gold & Silver Winners at State Science Fair

The Illinois Junior Academy of Science state (IJAS) competition was held last weekend at Northern Illinois University. 1400 projects and 193 papers competed. Saint Mary School Buffalo Grove 7th graders once again won big at the state fair.

Five 7th graders walked away with 3 gold and 2 silver awards in the experimental project contest and a silver award in the paper contest. Saint Mary 7th graders under the direction of science teacher Mrs. Linda Payne have been working toward the science fair since the beginning of school in August. Payne told us "the science project is an ongoing project that was integrated into our topics in the first trimester. We discussed the scientific method and the aspects of a proper controlled experiment." In the experimental project category, where there were 1400 submissions Ally Schwabe, Luke Wenzel and George Yacu all won gold. In the same category Sean Seidl and Melanie Zimmerman won silver. In the paper category Ally Schwabe won silver.

Saint Mary is a participating member of the IJAS. Each year some Saint Mary students go onto to the state competition but this is the first year to have five Saint Mary students win the gold and silver awards. In August 2013 Saint Mary opened a brand new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Lab and curriculum which is in addition to the science classes. The opening of the lab and incorporating STEM curriculum is in an ongoing process to teach 20th century learning skills to all students. Saint Mary will continue their ongoing involvement with IJAS and continue to support the advancement of the science curriculum.
