Teen shot and killed in Aurora

An 18-year-old man sitting outside on a porch on Aurora's near east side was killed and another man wounded when a man shot them both last night, police said. The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. on the 200 block of North Smith Street. Police are calling it a homicide and said the victims appeared targeted. Full story.

Dist. 300 names new superintendent

Community Unit District 300 picked Fred Heid, a chief academic officer for Duval County Public Schools in Jacksonville, Florida, as its next superintendent, a memo to district staff revealed yesterday. Maday gets another 32 years

Convicted bank robber Robert Maday had another 32 years added to his sentence by a federal judge yesterday for a crime spree that began when he escaped two Cook County state's attorney investigators and ended after a high-speed car chase a day later. Full story.

Oak Brook store burgled

A smash-and-grab burglar stole watches and jewelry from Oakbrook Center Mall's Lord & Taylor early yesterday morning, police and WBBM reported. The burglary happened just before 4:30 a.m. Full story.

Six Streamwood students charged in fight

Six Streamwood High School students were arrested and charged with mob action after a fight in the school Tuesday. One student, a 17-year-old male, is facing a felony aggravated battery charge as well after pushing a teacher, police said. Full story.

Elgin council fills vacant seat

Elgin City Council members chose Rosamaria "Rose" Martinez to fill the vacant council seat. Martinez is a past commander of American Legion Post 57 who works in the transportation department of Elgin Area School District 46. She fills the seat vacated by Anna Moeller. Full story.

Lawmakers may cut IMSA budget over diversity

The Illinois Math and Science Academy may see $1.8 million less in state funds after Democrats criticized the Aurora school for a lack of diversity. The state's proposed budget, which could be voted on today in the Illinois House, would allocate $16.6 million to IMSA. That's about 10 percent less than last year. Full story.
