Dive teams remove car from Fox River in Elgin

Divers removed a partially submerged car from the Fox River after it was reported stolen Tuesday morning, officials said.

The 2004 Cadillac was spotted in the river near Duncan Avenue just south of Interstate 90 in Elgin, the Elgin Fire Department said in a news release.

The car was empty, and no one was in danger, authorities said.

The fire department responded to the call at about 6:15 a.m. and found the car about 20 feet off the east bank of the river, fire officials said.

Elgin fire personnel were in the water minutes after arriving and found that the car was not occupied. The response was changed from rescue mode to recovery mode, the release said.

Divers from Elgin and South Elgin were deployed and worked with a towing company to remove the vehicle from the water. The vehicle was removed at 8:27 a.m., the release said.

How and why the vehicle wound up in the Fox River is still under investigation, fire officials said. The car was a total loss, or approximately $5,000.

Elgin Police Cmdr. Ana Lalley said the owner of the car, an Elgin resident, reported it stolen earlier in the morning.

"It is now an ongoing investigation into the stolen vehicle," she said.
