Two crashes on Metra’s North Central line

Service along Metra’s North Central line was disrupted twice Friday. A juvenile intentionally stepped in front a slow-moving train that afternoon near Lincolnshire, while later that day, a train hit a car in Des Plaines.

Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said the first incident occurred at 3:38 p.m., when North Central train 116, headed toward Chicago, struck the juvenile at Half Day Road. Authorities said the juvenile was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with injuries that were not life-threatening.

There were extensive delays along the line, resulting in two trains combining their runs.

The second incident took place at 6:12 p.m., police said. Train No. 115, which left Chicago’s Union Station at 5:31 p.m. struck a car at Touhy Avenue near Mannheim Road in Des Plaines. Police said the driver mistakenly turned onto the tracks from eastbound Touhy.

Des Plaines police said driver and two passengers were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The driver was cited for traffic violations, police said.

Train traffic was delayed by about 75 minutes.
