Movoto published the rankings on its blog, which is contains studies of towns and real estate markets around the country. For this ranking, Movoto started with the 50 largest cities in the state, then scored them in a variety of categories: amenities, cost of living, crime, education, employment, home value.

Here are few of the comments attached to the Top 10 towns:

• Mount Prospect: "Festivals like the Irish Festival, Fridays on the Green ... and family bike rides make Mount Prospect not only a good place to have a home, but a good place to call home."

• Arlington Heights: "Arlington Heights is booming right now -- especially downtown with its expansion of condos, businesses and delicious restaurants."

• Palatine: "Today Palatine maintains ... old-world charm with its nature, but also has a bustling, if quaint, downtown area."
