South Elgin man injured in hit-and-run

An SUV driver struck a South Elgin man Sunday as he crossed the street with his family in Elgin and then drove away, leaving the victim with serious injuries.

The hit-and-run occurred just before 7 p.m. as the 33-year-old victim crossed National Street at the bike path crosswalk east of the Fox River Bridge, Elgin police said in a statement. The vehicle — a Dodge Dakota with the words Dodge across the tailgate — was traveling west on National Street.

Emergency responders took the man Presence St. Joseph Hospital before transferring him to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Police continue to investigate the crash. The vehicle is believed to be burgundy or other dark color over gray, police said.
