Archery, Basketball and Self-Defense Classes at Sachs Recreation Center

A two-hour Self-Defense Training class for Teens (12 yrs.+) and Adults is offered each month, from 7:00-9:00 p.m., at Sachs Recreation Center, in Deerfield. These one-session classes are offered on Wednesdays, October 16 or November 13 or on Monday, December 16. Eight- to 11- year olds may sign up if a parent registers as well. Class includes lecture; demonstration; hands-on instruction; scenario-based training; defense against armed and unarmed attackers; single and multiple attackers; standing, sitting, and ground techniques; and rape prevention. Fee is $34 per Deerfield Park District Resident; $49 per Nonresident. Registration Code is #133046.

A High School Boys Basketball League, with weekly games of about one-hour per game, is taking individual registrations now for the late fall season. League dates are November 1 to December 13. Games are scheduled on Fridays, between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., at Sachs Recreation Center. There will be four teams in this "friendly but competitive" league. Deerfield Park District will make the teams; and teams will coach themselves. When registering, players may list the name of one friend they would like to be with on a team. The cost per player is $70 per Deerfield Park District Resident; $105 per Nonresident. League fee includes a tank top for players to wear during games and to keep. Registration Code is #133066.

A Youth Basketball League for boys and girls, where all children receive equal playing time, starts practicing the week of October 28. Games begin on Saturday, November 9. Players learn skills and drills commensurate with their age and ability. 3rd/4th grade teams play at Sachs Recreation Center and focus on fundamentals of basketball including shooting, passing, dribbling, and teamwork. 5th/6th grade teams continue to build on fundamental skills they have already acquired and work more on game situations and strategies, with 7th/8th grade teams learn more advanced basketball skills and team concepts. Girls (5th/6th and 7th/8th) play at Caruso Middle School. Boys (5th/6th and 7th/8th) play at Shepard Middle School. An end-of-season tournament will cap the 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade leagues. The cost per player is $150 per Deerfield Park District Resident; $225 per Nonresident. League fee includes a tank top for players to wear during games and to keep. Registration Code is #133045.

Archery! is offered at Sachs Recreation Center; and lessons are divided into three age groupings: 8-12 years; 13-18 years; and adults/19 years and up. Experienced instructors teach Olympic-style archery to students. Course focusing on shooting form, scoring, how to compete; and how to compete like a champion! Classes run on Wednesdays, from October 30 through December 18 with times as follows: 4-5:00 p.m. for 8-12 years; 5:15-6:15 p.m. for 13-18 years; and 6:30-7:30 p.m. for adults.
