Wilcox died of multiple traumatic injuries, Portillo said. He added that tests indicated there was no sign of alcohol in Wilcox's system.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Sergio Ortiz said the cause of the crash at 7:13 p.m. Sunday near mile marker 11 remains under investigation.

Ortiz said Wilcox and a passenger were eastbound on I-94 in a 2004 Nissan when the vehicle drifted onto the shoulder and into a fence.

Wilcox was in critical condition when he was extracted from the vehicle and taken to Condell.

The passenger suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene.
