Olson sets tone in Lakes’ victory

Lakes senior Dayna Olson came out ready to play Thursday night.

Olson scored 9 of her 13 points in the first four minutes of the game, as Lakes went on to defeat visiting North Chicago 58-47 in North Suburban Conference Prairie Division action. She accounted for 11 of the Eagles’ 15 points in the first quarter.

“We needed energy and Dayna always provides that for us,” Lakes coach Pete Schneider said. “She had several offensive rebounds and went hard to the basket. Dayna is so athletic. She has just really started focusing on basketball this year and is coming on.”

North Chicago impressed Schneider. The Warhawks were led by Carolyn Leonard and Dara Tanner with 12 and 9 points, respectively.

“They got into foul trouble and that hurt them at the end,” he said. “They play very physical.

“We have been playing pretty good defense and did not want to give up this many points. We did not move our feet well and allowed too much penetration into the lane. Maya Schmitt and Nicole Mogged played solid defense. We just needed better team defense.”

Terese McMahon scored 22 points for Lakes (14-11, 8-2), which shot 22 of 30 from the free-throw line, shooting 19 foul shots in the fourth quarter. Amanda Beetschen added 9 points coming off the bench.
