• Josť L. Mendez-Zamudio, 17, of the 500 block of Spring Street in Aurora, was charged with retail theft Thursday after police said he stole more than $300 in merchandise from the Elgin Walmart in the 1100 block of South Randall Road, according to a police report. Mendez-Zamudio, who was charged as an adult, had his bail set at $15,000 and he needs $1,500 to get out of jail before his next court date on Feb. 1 at the Kane County Judicial Center. Retail theft is a Class 3 felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

• A 75-pound white metal mailbox was stolen between noon Jan. 11 and 9:30 a.m. Jan. 12 from Blue Hills Inc., 2S311 Deerpath Road, Batavia, police said.

• A man reported the theft of his Samsung Galaxy S3 cellphone, which he had forgotten minutes before on a counter, at 10:13 a.m. Tuesday at the Kane County Circuit Court Clerk's office, 840 Randall Road, St. Charles.
