It could have been intentional.

But if not, the Hoffman-Schaumburg Council of the Knights of Columbus wants to make sure a ring dropped into one of their "Tootsie Roll" drive cash containers gets back to its rightful owner.

The drive was held during the weekend of Sept. 21-23 to collect money for local charities that help people with intellectual disabilities.

The effort was very successful, resulting in the collection of several thousand dollars, said drive chairman Jim Manfre. The ring, he said, was found when members emptied all the cash containers on a table.

"It just kind of showed up," he said. Because the donations were combined, they don't know from which container held the ring.

Although the organization had cash containers at three churches, Manfre said the ring likely was dropped into a container set up on one of six street corners in the Hoffman Estates or Schaumburg area, or at one of the stores where members were stationed. Those stores, Manfre said, included Jewel, 1069 N. Roselle Road; Walgreens, 1000 N. Roselle Road; Walgreens, 770 E. Schaumburg Road; and Valli Foods, 850 N. Roselle Road.

A description of the ring is not being mentioned so it can get back to its true owner. Anyone who suspects the ring is theirs can contact the Knights of Columbus via their website, www.hoffmanschaumburgknights.com.
