Pizza showdown

Who makes Palatine's best pizza? Decide for yourself from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at the annual pizza showdown hosted by the Palatine Jaycees. More than 20 Palatine-area pizza restaurants, including Artistic Cuisine, Papa Saverios, Slice of Chicago, Pizza Bella and Vini's Pizza, will put their pies and reputations on the line. A $10 donation gets you samples and a ballot.

Wildfire's GF special

In addition to its regular gluten-free items, Wildfire Restaurants will feature gluten-free foods on a special four-course dinner menu. The menu includes grilled sugar cane shrimp, miso glazed Atlantic salmon and slow-braised short ribs. This GF special is available Monday, Nov. 5, in Oak Brook, Tuesday, Nov. 6, in Chicago, Wednesday, Nov. 7, in Glenview, Thursday, Nov. 8, in Schaumburg and concludes Friday, Nov. 9, in Lincolnshire. $70 per person with wine pairings; $55 without.

Flaming pie

La Tosca's flaming volcano pizza is a 14-inch pizza with a dough dome that is lit on fire table-side. The dome is removed and put in a bowl with marinara sauce so guests can break pieces off and dip them in the sauce. Below the dome is a traditional pizza. A flaming volcano cheese pizza costs is $17.95; $2 for each additional topping.
