"It's pretty straightforward and tragic," Prospect Heights Police Chief James Dunne said.

Mishigdor and his unidentified girlfriend had left an area hotel about 3 a.m. and were traveling south on Milwaukee Avenue when the two had an argument and the girlfriend jumped out of the moving vehicle, Dunne said.

Mishigdor made a U-turn and stopped his car in the northbound lanes near the median with the flashers on. He then crossed into the southbound lanes trying to talk to his girlfriend and he was hit by a Ford Windstar van, police said.

The driver of the van, who was on his way to work, stopped, rendered aid to Mishigdor and called 911.

The accident is under investigation, but no charges are expected against the van driver, police said.
