Investigation continues into fatal Kane County crash

Police say it will be a few weeks before they wrap up their investigation of a Sunday morning crash in Kane County that killed one teen and seriously injured another, authorities said Monday.

The one-car crash occurred about 12:50 a.m. Sunday on Plank Road west of Engel Road near Burlington, killing 17-year-old Lawrence Echols of Elgin. Shadontre Smith, 19, of South Elgin, was flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville after the crash and remained in serious condition Monday afternoon, a hospital spokesman said.

Two other Elgin teens, including driver Shannon Hill, 17 and front seat passenger Jamiah Harrison, 17, walked several miles to Sherman Hospital in Elgin after the accident, where they were treated and released.

The preliminary investigation shows a sedan carrying the teens was heading west on Plank at a high rate of speed before it crossed the centerline, left the road, rolled several times and struck a tree.

The Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team and the Kane County state’s attorney’s office are investigating.
