Prospect Heights police said Saturday they arrested two 15-year-old boys suspected of firing shots Friday afternoon in a parking lot area near hotels in the 500 block of Milwaukee Avenue.
"There were people around who could have been hurt; that's how we got such good descriptions," said Police Chief Jamie Dunne.
The two Prospect Heights residents, who were on foot, were arrested near Old Willow Road by Mount Prospect police officers. Officers also found an automatic hand gun they believe the suspects hid.
The names of the suspects were not released because they are juveniles. Authorities said the event was gang-related.
The young man accused of firing the shots was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member, and felony mob action, Assistant Chief Al Steffen said Saturday. The second suspect was charged with felony mob action.
Whoever was shot at fled the scene, said Dunne.
The suspects told officers the shooting was in retaliation for a similar incident the day before when police got reports of shots fired, but found no perpetrators or victims. That occurred in the same area of the city.
