Elgin Fox Trot changes race day, course

If you’re planning to run in — or watch — the 35th annual Elgin Valley Fox Trot, don’t head to downtown Elgin on Memorial Day. For the first time ever, the race will be held on Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, instead of on Memorial Day itself.

Heather Williams, special events assistant for the city of Elgin, explained the reason for the change of dates.

“There were two main reasons (for the change),” Williams said. “One, we wanted to have the extra people in Elgin to benefit downtown businesses — to see Elgin when it is busier and more exciting. Many businesses are closed on Memorial Day.

Secondly, on Memorial Day, there’s a conflict with veterans’ events. We wanted to keep the roads opened so (participants) could get to the veterans’ events and services.”

Celebrating its 35th year, the Fox Trot offers races for all levels of competition, including a 10-mile run, a 5K run and a two-mile Walk for a Cause. The courses begin in the Center City area at Kimball and Douglas, and take runners through historic neighborhoods as well as the winding hills and ravines of Lords Park.

Races start at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, May 26. Race day registration will be open 6 to 7:15 a.m. in the gym at the Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way. Another change this year is the course, which was altered slightly for cost savings, according to Williams.

“(The new course) has fewer road closures that require police to man them,” Williams said. “We’ve kept true to the character of the race, though.”

Williams said last year’s Elgin Valley Fox Trot attracted 2,300 participants and she expects a similar turnout this year. She said volunteers are still needed, and encourages people to call her at (847) 214-5413 if they’d like to help.

“We have lots of jobs (for volunteers) to do on the day of the race,” Williams said. “We need (volunteers) to man a water station and help out with registration.”

Runners and spectators are invited to spend some time after the race at a post-event party, featuring classic rock band ARRA playing from 8:15 to 11 a.m. Food and drink will be available, along with family activities. There will be sponsors offering everything from massages to free sample products.

This year’s Fox Trot is celebrating its 35th anniversary with ‘Running Through Time,’ a series of special displays and features highlighting the history of the race. Anyone who has stories, photos or memorabilia from past races is encouraged to get in touch with Williams. Past race winners are invited to attend as special guests at the anniversary ceremony.

Race day registration is $40 for the 5K and $55 for the 10-mile. All registrants will receive a cotton T-shirt, or may upgrade to a tech shirt for $10 extra.
