DuPage mum on officer-involved shooting at Fermilab

DuPage County sheriff’s deputies on Monday continued to investigate a weekend shooting at Fermilab involving an off-duty police officer, but would not release any new details.

Police previously said the officer witnessed a hit-and-run crash Saturday morning near Route 59 and Dale Avenue in West Chicago, then followed the offending vehicle to the Fermilab property near Batavia, where a confrontation ensued in the parking lot.

At some point, the officer opened fire on the vehicle, striking a back-seat passenger, police said. The passenger was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva and listed in stable condition Sunday.

Police have said the officer was off-duty and in a personal vehicle. A Fermilab spokeswoman said no Fermilab employees or visitors were involved.

As of Monday afternoon, no charges were filed, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Dawn Domrose said the investigation was ongoing but no further details were being released.

West Chicago police administrators were unavailable because of the Presidents Day holiday, according to a dispatcher.
